Review of Revlon Lip Butters

Revlon Lip Butters

From left to right: Lollipop, Brown Sugar, and Sugar Plum

Look at them. Justtt look at ’em! Revlon Lip Butters come in a number of shades, many of which can be flattering on a wide variety of skin tones.  Missing form the bunch is Pink Truffle, one of my favorites from the line and a definite my-lip-color-but-better holy grail product.  I actually went to pick one up today, but I had already taken the photos.  You can find Pink Truffle here. Now for the review…

Revlon Lip Butters

Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters

Positives

I am absolutely in love with this line. The texture, the smell, the color payoff…just perfect! First let me start with the smell.  It has a very subtle shea buttery type scent that you will hardly notice most of the time, and will probably like when you do pick up on it.  The texture is…well, buttery.  It’s smooth and moisturizing without feeling slippery the way these types of products often can.  It’s also got a really impressive color payoff that manages to give a gorgeous tint subtle enough to look naturally flattering, but bold enough to give good oompf!  Somehow the colors are so universally flattering they look like completely different shades on different skin tones.

Lollipop is a pretty bright blue-based pink that’s pretty sheer, but has an impressive build.  I use this for a bold lip paired with a simple cate eye and it makes me look like a barbie doll. So fun.  Love it!

Brown Sugar gives my lips the most beautiful bronze shimmer, and complements my skin tone in unspeakable ways! I almost exclusively use these in the summer months when I’m big on highlighter over blush.

Pink Truffle is a gorgeous my-lip-but-better that gives me a nice, warm flush.  I like it best in the spring and summer months, but again have used up so many tubes in the last year since I discovered these that it’s safe to say I’m a fan all year round.

Sugar Plum gives a beautiful plum flush that looks divine in the winter and fall, but also works in the summer when applied lightly. I have literally gone through almost 10 of these Sugar Plum bad boys in less than a year, and I de-potted the rest once I hit tube.  See below for proof.

De-potted Sugar Plum

Negatives

No strong negatives come to mind.  Brown Sugar has gotten the least amount of use, mostly due to the fact that it leaves behind an annoying glitter residue on the lip.  I have, however, gone through two tubes already which should tell you its not much of a deal breaker.

Verdict

These are not longwearing colors, nor are they advised as such.  They are a beautiful cross between tinted lip balm and a satin lipstick.  I highly recommend them to everyone, but especially to those lipgloss and lip balm mavens who are wary of or inexperienced with lipsticks and looking to jump in!  That’s definitely where I was last year when I first picked these up, and I must say they were my gateway drug.

If you wanna see how I de-pot these and other lipsticks, let me know! What are your holy grail lip products?

Is it just me, or is liquid lipstick seriously underrated?

liquid lipstick

L to R from the top: Stila “Patina,” Lime Crime “Red Velvet” Velvetine, Stila “Fiery,” Stila “Amore”

I  bought my first ever liquid lipstick on a whim around this time last year while browsing around at Sephora.  Brand? Stila.  Color? Patina.  I have to admit it was love at first site, and ever since I have become enamored/obsessed/in love with liquid lipsticks of every shade, finish, color, and hue.

What’s so special about liquid lipstick? Here are 10 things:

1. It’s the most longwearing option out there. Period…Ok, maybe second to a stain but stains aren’t as fun in my opinion.

2. They can have the most alluring matte finish you’ve ever seen. Literally a velvet(ine) finish.

3. They photograph amazingly.

4. Eliminate the need to reapply.

5. MUCH more cost effective than your normal lipstick since they have great color pay off, and you only need a thin layer.

6. They don’t transfer as much. HUGE plus in my book.

7. Set it and forget it.

8. Great, scratch that, perfect for nights out on the town.

9. Perfect for warm weather.

10.  Less mess.

Cons

The number one complaint I hear about liquid lipsticks are that they can be drying.  The solution?  Moisturize with your favorite balm about 15 minutes before you start, maybe while you do your hair or other makeup.  This will ensure that you have a soft and moisturized base for your liquid lipstick!

I used to suffer from perpetual lip peeling and chap before I started exfoliating and moisturizing my lips at night before bed.  I literally saw a 180 degree turn around in a week! My favorite lip exfoliator is super cheap, and there are also tons of DIY options out there. Finding affordable options should be no problem at all!

The second most common complaint I hear about liquid lipstick is that they are difficult to remove.

Solutions

Using lip balm as a base will more than greatly help with this.

If you are still having difficulty, apply some petroleum jelly (or any lip balm with this ingredient) to your lips and let it sit while you remove all your other makeup.  By the time you finish, it should wipe off with ease!

For my old souls out there who also use cold cream, myself included, this works like a dream every time! Smooth some on your lips like you would any balm, and use a baby wipe or makeup wipe to remove.

Final Word

All things considered, I strongly believe that liquid lipsticks are more than worth it! Not all liquid lipsticks are created equal.  I recently tried the Wet’n’Wild liquid lipsticks, and though I love a lot of their other products I was very displeased.  I am someone who is always pulling my lips in, but when you do this with the W’n’W, it sticks together and peels…it is a very sticky liquid lip color and I don’t like that at all.  If you don’t mind this, then by all means look into them!  They are affordable, have great color pay off, and a good variety of shades.

I am working on tutorials and looks centered around liquid lipsticks so stay tuned! As always, thank you for stopping by!

The Best drugstore makeup products for lips, tried and true!

1.Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss

Available in an assortment of colors, this product is a solid gloss. The color payoff is great because it is strong enough to make an impression, but sheer enough to be versatile on a vast variety of skintones (hello hotpink).  It is not at all sticky, and I love the shea butter scent.  I have three colors, and I will definitely be purchasing more in the future.

L to R: Pink Pop (180), Peach Petal (150), and Coral Reef (170).

2. Wet’n’Wild Megalast Lipstick

These are literally amazing, and for 1.99$ a pop they have me leaving the store feeling guilty.  They are smooth and moisturizing, longwearing, and very pigmented.  They come in the most beautiful colors, often dupe-worthy to many of MAC’s most popular shades, and they just look absolutely beautiful.  I own almost ten of them, and I always have two of each of my favorite colors so I never have to go without.  In the coming Fall and Winter months, Vamp It Up and Cheery Bomb will be my go-to dramatic lip colors. I highly recommend you try these out.

L to R: Vamp it Up (919B) and Cherry Bomb (918D).

3. Revlon Lipstick

I own so many of these it’s amazing, but my three present favorites are Copperglow Berry, Cocoa Craving, and Iced Amethyst.

The Revlon Lipstick line has countless shades to flatter a wide variety of skintones.  They are moisturizing, glide on smoothly, and wear long and well.  Even the matte shades wear comfortably all day!  If you need to reapply, these also work well when overlapped.  Revlon lipsticks have been called MAC dupes, and that’s not for no reason.  For half the price they are definitely worth picking up if you are a MAC girl.

4. Rimmel Lipstick

Close second to Revlon, and considerably less expensive.  Most of my Rimmel lipsticks are from the Kate collection, but I also have some in the Moisture Renew line.  My favorite Moisture Renew: Vintage Pink.

Rimmel Vintage Pink

It is highly moisturizing, with a great color payoff.  It is similar to MAC’s Up the Amp, but with more pink lilac undertones and I have never seen it look bad on anybody!   My favorites from the Kate line are 10 and 04.  They are pigmented and moisturizing with a beautiful natural shine.

5. Revlon Lip Butters

I have yet to meet someone who didn’t absolutely love these! They are a universal favorite across a vast number of skintones, and they are a most-have for everyday moisturizing, buildable lip color.  See my in-depth review here.  Here are the swacthes again.

6. L’Oreal Infallible Lipstick

Another popular lipstick, this product’s best characteristic is its longevity.  It is seriously long wearing, with little transfer.  My favorite sets to a matte finish, but maintains a moisturizing feel on the lips all day.  This color is seriously beautiful for fall and I absolutely cannot wait to break it out soon!

My skin just started getting pretty oily.  Granted, just in my t-zone, but it’s never really been a problem for me until this summer so I was freaking out.  I had been looking for a high quality, effective finishing powder that wouldn’t leave me looking cakey or give me the annoying ashy flashback effect in photos…and I finally found it: MAC (MSF) Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Dark.  How dost I love thee? Let me count the ways.

mac mineralize skinfinish

Powdered Silk for a healthy glow

Positives

Where do I start? It is silky and smooth and melts right into your skin and/or foundation to create a matte finish that looks like skin.  It never looks cakey!  I use it during the day if my nose starts to get shiny, and it always does the trick.  It’s super breathable and I never feel like it is heavy or thick.  It is a great powder for photographed events as it leaves no flashback, but it still has a vibrancy that adds a health glow to any makeup look! This comes with a lot of product, so it’s well worth the price.  On days when I am not feeling like foundation, lightly dusting this all over my face gives a great matte finish with just the right amount of coverage.  This is a must have for sure.

Silky smooth mattifying coverage that doesn’t leave me cakey

Negatives

I must say, I don’t have any.  Perhaps for someone looking for more coverage, this powder could disappoint.  But it isn’t really advertised as a powder foundation so much as it is marketed as a finishing powder so I don’t see that being a big issue.  The price may deter some, as it did for me, but I am so glad I finally splurged because it is well worth it.  It is actually pretty affordable compared to some of the other high end powders on the market.

With everything said, I have to say I LOVE this product and highly recommend it!  I think everyone will definitely love it if they give it a try.

Nearly Naked is a dream come true

I bought this foundation shortly after I bought my Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation in hopes of finding a dupe that is easier on the pockets. Did I succeed? Absolutely.

Revlon nearly naked foundation

In all her glory…

Positives

This foundation is nothing short of amazing.  While it does not slide on as smoothly as the Bobbi Brown, it performs just as well in every other aspect and even supersedes its oil-control abilities.  It stays all day, even outside, even in considerable heat!  It is lightweight, buildable coverage at its finest.  Drugstore dupe for my favorite foundation, $9.99.  Being asked about my foundation routine in Sephora by the makeup consultants while wearing a $10 drugstore product? Priceless.  It photographs beautifully with no flashback, and works wonderfully with my milk of magnesia/aquaprime pre-foundation routine.

Cappuccino

Negatives

This foundation, being so lightweight, is a bit runnier than average.  Not a problem for me, but the lack of a pump or other more controlled dispenser opens the door for potential mess.

Verdict

This has to be the best foundation I have ever tried when you take both price and performance into account.  It is beautifully light with a buildable coverage that performs well on small breakouts.  Great for combination skin, and those without severe discoloration.

This product can be found at most drugstores for $9.99.  Cappuccino is a bit dark, but I prefer to go dark than lighter, and you can always blend with a lighter shade.
