Drugstore Edition:  The best hair products to restore dry or damaged hair

drugstore hair products

Best hair products that you can find at the drugstore!

Quality hair products are of the utmost importance! Not only can they help maintain hair health, they are essential to preventing damage and can even be helpful for reversing some of the damage that has already been done.  I relied on each and every one of the products shown, as well as  others, during the beginning stages of my hair journey and I strongly recommend them to anyone just starting out!

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle

The Aussie 3 minute miracle is just that: a miracle in 3 minutes.  This product is not only an excellent hydrating conditioner, but it also gives incredible slip! This makes it one of the best detanglers around.  It smells amazing and is loaded with a slew of impressive and natural ingredients.  I often leave this on for more than 3 minutes, but 3 minutes is definitely enough time to do the trick.  I turn to this after a hard protein treatment or after a henna treatment to restore the necessary moisture balance to my hair.  I purchased this product for the first time last winter and I have already gone through over 20 bottles! I always buy 3 at a time because I cannot stand to go without.

V05 Moisture Milks

I use these amazing cheapie conditioners regularly as part of my cowash regimen.  My favorite one is the Shea Cashmere.  It has an impressive list of ingredients, filled with a significant amount of oils, proteins, and vitamins! When I use this as a cowash, I always let it set for a few minutes before rinsing it out.  I am left with soft, silky, stengthened hair every time and I cannot go without this product.  It is an essential in any healthy hair regimen for its affordability and effectiveness.

Organix Intense Moisturizing Treatment

This product does exactly what it says: delivers intense moisture.  That being said, I rarely use it alone! By paying attention to my hair, I found that it responds best to a healthy balance of hard protein and moisture, and this conditioner is central to achieving this balance! I beat one egg and add it to this moisturizing conditioner for a balanced protein treatment that both strengthens and hydrates.

Renpure Cleansing Conditioner

This cleansing conditioner has not only done wonders for my hair, but it has also done incredibly well to improve the condition of my scalp! The two most commonly overlooked areas of hair health are the scalp and the ends and this product covers them both.  My flavor of choice: Rosemary Mint.  This combination of stimulating and soothing ingredients helped eradicate my dandruff and promote growth.  It take a while to get used to the fact that it doesn’t lather, but once you do you will not be able to do without!

Dove Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo & Conditioner

So, while I have given up using sulfates on my hair with any sort of regularity, sometimes you need a clarifying shampoo.  This is one of my all time favorites for this very purpose! It has sulfates and is clarifying, able to cut through grease with ease.  At the same time, the oils it is made of keep it from being overly drying! The conditioner is thick and give great shine, I like to use it as a cowash in between my cleansing conditioners during the week. If you want to see a detailed post all about cowashes, what they are, why I do them, and how to do it then comment and let me know!

Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner

This conditioner is hands down the best detangler ever! I have literally used this on every hair texture, and even on tangled hair extensions and it comes through each and every time.  It has amazing slip, and is just the right amount of thickness to really coat every strand for maximum coverage.  I mainly use this as a detangler, and for this reason it also makes a great cowash conditioner.  I use this cowash after a light protein treatment to restore moisture to my hair and make for easy combing after applying the protein.  I highly recommend this to anyone looking to significantly reduce breaking and shedding when handling wet hair. Protip: Hair is at its weakest when wet, so only comb through wet hair when you have a detangling conditioner applied! This will cut down on breakage and the split ends that come along with it!

Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray

This heat protectant is one the most popular out there, and for good reason.  It works very well, and adds a beautiful shine without weighing hair down or making it look greasy.  It has a nice light scent and seems to help with frizz as well, since I don’t use an antifrizz when I use this and it holds up very well.  The only downside? You need to experiment to find the perfect amount for you.  Too much and it leaves a sticky residue. What’s your favorite heat protectant?

Reduces breakage by strengthening hair!

Organix hair Oils

These hair oils are an absolute lifesaver! They are ultra lightweight and fast absorbing so that they do not weigh your hair down or make it greasy.  I usually apply these oils, yes all of them, a drop or two each to my hair whenever it feels parched and after every wash and blow dry.  I find that they work particularly well to moisturize my ends and prevent splitting.  My favorites are the Keratin Oil, the Macadamia Oil, and the intense moisture Argan Oil.  If you would like to see an in-depth post on these oils let me know! Wonderfully fragrant, they add a nice finishing touch to any hair style. Pro-tip: Never apply oil to wet hair! Oil and water don’t mix and this will prevent the oil from absorbing into the hair shaft leaving your hair greasy and weighed down.  For best results, wait until your hair is completely dry before application!

Organix Biotin and Collagen Spray

Used with my Organix Keratin flat iron spray and my Tresemme heat protectant, this spray makes the perfect addition to my favorite pre-heat regimen.  Used alone, it thickens my hair while strengthening and promoting elasticity.  I purchased this product for the first time this spring and I am already due for a repurchase!

Organix Flat Iron Spray

The organix flat iron spray is the third and final ingredient in my makeshift proprietary blend/amalgamation heat protectant! Used alone it gives excellent weight shine that won’t get sticky no matter how much you use.  It also really helps get your hair straight and eliminate frizz.  Used as part of my mix it does all these things, and complements the other sprays very nicely.  It has a like cocoa shea buttery smell and is dark in color.   best hair products

Renpure Argan Oil Blow Out Creme

I bought this last winter, but only just started using it this summer, and I am certainly glad that I did.  I apply this to my hair right after washing and towel drying and it works amazingly to both protect my hair and add shine.  It gives bouncing body and it helps reduce frizz when applied to hair.  It really does complement the blow drying process, making it easier and more efficient as well as giving the desired shine and body.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave In

I use this a little differently than it was probably intended, as part of my prepoo (preshampoo) treatment.  Along with my essential oils and some good old vaseline, this leave in adds incredible moisture and hydration to my hair before a clarifying shampoo and is a must have.  Prepoo treatments are of the utmost importance because of the way they help protect the hair from the stresses of washing, and prevent overdrying that can result from the sulfates in shampoos that lather.  It also helps to improve the shine, body, and softness of your hair even after you have finished washing your hair.  I highly recommend you all try the prepoo and let me know how it works for you! Comment below if you would like to see a series of posts for different prepoo methods for different hair types and needs!

Aloe Vera Gel

What is aloe vera gel doing on the list? Well, this is an essential for me all year round! As part of my healthy hair journey, I have resolved to wear my hair down a lot less due to the stresses this can cause and the sock bun has become my best friend! To slick down flyaways and keep my hair looking sleek, without drying it out, I turn to aloe vera gel as a hair gel and hairspray alternative.  Aloe vera gel gives a soft hold, no flaking, and simultaneously moisturizes the hair! For this reason, I always make sure to have plenty of it lying around.

Biotin 5000 mcg

Healthy hair comes from the inside out! This is one of the most overlooked pieces to a healthy hair journey.  In addition to a healthy, well balanced diet and proper hydration, supplements can really help take your hair health to the next level! I have been using CVS Biotin for months now and the results are undeniable! I always have two or three bottles at a time so I never run out and  take them religiously.  If you are prone to breakouts, know that that is a somewhat commonly reported side effect of the Biotin supplement.  I find that increasing my water intake while taking  Biotin helps immensely.  I also take this everyday a month at a time, followed by a month off , and alternative.  This ensures that I do not build up a tolerance, and also gives my body a break! Protip: As with any supplement, be sure to check with your physician with any questions or concerns.

I hope you found all of this information helpful! I am super excited to started my healthy hair series, and I hope you will try all of these tips out for yourselves.  Let me know what works for you, or if you have any questions about particular hair types.  I will be more than happy to do the research and put a post up!

Here is my tried and true list of the must have essential oils for ultimate hair health.

I personally enjoy the nowfoods line for most of my essential oils!  This line is affordable, reputable, and very easy to purchase from amazon.com.  You can get free two day shipping if you have prime.  They can also be purchased at health food stores, or at your local GNC.

Jojoba

Essential Oil

Jojoba Oil

This essential oil is super effective because it mimics the natural sebum your scalp manufactures on it’s own. It’s on the expensive side, but it is also super potent so it works out nicely. You will only need a couple drops in a carrier oil to do the trick. It moisturizes and seals in moisture for the perfect solution to a dry, thirsty scalp. This is sooo crucial. Think of your hair as the crop and your scalp as the soil, and you’ll understand why a healthy scalp can literally make or break healthy hair.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been getting a lot of buzz lately for it’s skin and hair benefits, but when it comes to dandruff this super affordable essential oil is very, very underrated. It’s really light and smells amazing, so most will absolutely love this. It’s affordability and lightweight texture make it the perfect carrier oil. (For those who don’t know, a carrier oil constitutes the majority of your hair oil mix, and helps dilute stronger oils so they can be applied directly to your skin in smaller doses). Coconut oil is what really does the work in any dandruff elixir.

If you have greasy hair, or are prone to it, using this as a scalp treatment 2-3 times a week will absolutely do the trick! Do the treatment right before a wash (be sure to use clarifying shampoo), and you should see results in less than two weeks.

Sweet Almond Oil

Essential oil

Sweet Almond Oil

Another carrier oil, this essential oil is not only great for banishing dandruff but it also promotes hair growth!  In fact, the use of this oil as a hair growth aid dates back all the way to Ancient Egypt.  Those Egyptians sure did know a lot about beauty!  But seriously guys, talk about a double whammy. This is used in similar quantities to the coconut oil, but a little less. This oil has a light scent, and is very lightweight so it will do well with in this mixture.

Castor Oil

essential oil

Castor Oil

Castor oil is one of the most agreed upon essential oils when it comes to hair growth. This oil really works! Applying it to your hair as a scalp treatment 2-3 times a week, and you will see fuller longer hair in no time! This oil is very thick, almost like syrup, and so you will want to wash it out after applying. This also works amazingly for thickening eyebrows and eyelashes, so it is well worth the money.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

essential oil

I have only used the Tropic Isle JBCO, so I can only vouch for this one

Jamaican Black Castor oil is just an alternative to standard castor oil. I personally believe it is more effective, but it has the down side of being even thicker. Literally almost molasses thick. If you are willing to use this oil as a treatment, I think it is well worth it. It can be used overnight as well for better results. I use this oil on my scalp during weeks when I am wearing protective styles.

After using all of these essential oils, the trick for clarifying your hair is to apply shampoo and work it in before you add water. Add water to lather and rinse only after you have added shampoo. If you add water before you add the shampoo, you will not be able to get all the oil out and your hair will be greasy for days afterwards.

These essential oils can also be used effectively as spot treatment for areas of thinning and balding, around the edges for example. Castor oil can be a real miracle worker in that respect.

Feel free to comment or email me with any questions! I have a lot of personal experience that I would love to share.

Vaseline may just be one of the best beauty products on the market

When you think beauty product, you probably don’t think petroleum jelly.  Well, neither did I, but that should change! Here are 11 ways that Vaseline is the best beauty product out there.  Here are, in no particular order, the 11 beauty related Vaseline uses that keep me coming back jar after jar.

12. Make Perfume Last  Longer

Perfume evaporates faster off of dry skin! Rub some vaseline on the areas you would normally apply your scent, and then spray.  Your perfume will evaporate much more slowly, and last all day.

11. Lip Balm

Anyone who has ever used Vaseline as a lip balm can attest to its ability to make your lips baby soft.  Never used it? Chances are you actually have! Most lip balms (think Carmex, among others) have petrolatum as the first, or one of the first ingredients, and so its one of the major active ingredients needed to give you soft, moisturized lips.  How does Vaseline achieve this? It seals in moisture.

10. Lip Exfoliator

Let’s be real: with fall creeping in, and winter just around the corner we are all going to need a good lip exfoliator.  Most are expensive, except for my all time favorite one by elf, so you may want to think about a DIY if you don’t have lip exfoliator handy!  All you need is vaseline and brown sugar, and you’ve got yourself a lip exfoliator you can do at home in no time.

9.  Manicure

Many of you may have already heard of the first three vaseline uses, but this one is a little less known.  You know when you go outside of your nail, and have little flecks of nail polish on your skin surrounding? Well, here is where vaseline can come in handy. If you don’t have time to soak your hands afterwards, using vaseline to rim around your nail will prevent the polish from adhering to your skin! All you have to do is paint, let set for a few minutes (does not have to be completely dyr, just not wet), and then wipe around the nail with a Q-Tip.  Works like a charm every time!

8.  Dry Shaving Cream

Have you ever gotten ready only to realize that you missed a spot shaving? If you’re anything like me, you need to take care of it immediately! On days like these, vaseline is an absolute life saver.  Take some vaseline and smooth it over the area that you would like to shave.  Using a quality, ie. sharp, but disposable razor shave off the hairs you missed! The area will be smooth, easy, moisturized and most importantly hairless in no time.

7. Prepoo

Prepoo, for people who don’t know, is a pre-shampoo treatment you do for your hair before you shampoo! It is super important for girls with dry, damaged, or chemically treated hair and I strongly recommend that everyone do one at least twice a month! Let me know if you want to see a post on this! Anyways, apply the vaseline to the length of your hair before using a clarifying shampoo to see incredible shine and cut down on the stresses sulfates can inflict on your hair.  For best results, let sit under a shower cap for 30 minutes.

6. Split End Prevention

Jumping off the last post, vaseline can be incredibly vital to sealing moisture in your hair.  Where is this most important? Often in your ends.  Use vaseline on the ends of your hair to lock in moisture and prevent splitting!  For people with fine, greasy, or grease prone hair this is best done as a prepoo treatment. You will definitely see an improvement!

5. Skin Protectant

Vaseline has got your back ladies! One of my favorite vaseline uses is as a skin protectant.  This works in the same way as described in the manicure use.  Apply to skin, usually on the perimeter of your hairline or to the scalp, before using dye or chemical relaxer.  This will protect your skin from the chemicals you are using while you complete the treatment.  Vaseline can also be used on the scalp for further protection.  Always protect your skin!

4. Foot Spa

If you haven’t already, definitely check out my DIY at home foot spa post telling you how to get super soft feet overnight!  I used another product by vaseline, their gel oil, but plain old petroleum jelly will work wonders as well! Use the same procedure, swapping in vaseline and you will have soft touchable feet literally overnight.

3. Set Eyebrows

This may not be ideal for those with oily skin, but in the colder months when dry skin plagues many of us, vaseline can be used to set and seal eyebrows beautifully!  I prefer this to wax in the colder months because it is more breathable, won’t freeze (yes it has gotten that cold where I’ve lived…-20 degrees anyone?), and it’s very moisturizing.  Apply to eyebrows with a Q-Tip for precision after filling them in, and you are good to go!

2. High Fashion Eyeshadow

I know you’ve all seen this look done time and time again.

vaseline uses

Ever wonder how they achieve this look? Vaseline! Well, even if that isn’t exactly what they use I am sure it is something extremely similar.  Apply your eyeshadow as usual, then pat some vaseline on top for this high shine, high fashion look.  If you would like to see a tutorial I would be more than happy to do one for this makeup look!

1. Lip Analgesic

Chapped lips can be painful.  Distractingly painful.  Trust me ladies, I feel your pain! That’s why I have to recommend vaseline as a serious analgesic.  An analgesic is a topical pain reliever.  When applied to chapped or broken lips, it relieves the pain almost immediate and then seals in the moisture need to heal.  Never be without this beauty must-have during those dreaded winter months!

Ok, those are my top vaseline uses when it comes to beauty.  I hope you found the list helpful! As always, feel free to be in touch with me and please comment!

Is it just me, or is liquid lipstick seriously underrated?

liquid lipstick

L to R from the top: Stila “Patina,” Lime Crime “Red Velvet” Velvetine, Stila “Fiery,” Stila “Amore”

I  bought my first ever liquid lipstick on a whim around this time last year while browsing around at Sephora.  Brand? Stila.  Color? Patina.  I have to admit it was love at first site, and ever since I have become enamored/obsessed/in love with liquid lipsticks of every shade, finish, color, and hue.

What’s so special about liquid lipstick? Here are 10 things:

1. It’s the most longwearing option out there. Period…Ok, maybe second to a stain but stains aren’t as fun in my opinion.

2. They can have the most alluring matte finish you’ve ever seen. Literally a velvet(ine) finish.

3. They photograph amazingly.

4. Eliminate the need to reapply.

5. MUCH more cost effective than your normal lipstick since they have great color pay off, and you only need a thin layer.

6. They don’t transfer as much. HUGE plus in my book.

7. Set it and forget it.

8. Great, scratch that, perfect for nights out on the town.

9. Perfect for warm weather.

10.  Less mess.

Cons

The number one complaint I hear about liquid lipsticks are that they can be drying.  The solution?  Moisturize with your favorite balm about 15 minutes before you start, maybe while you do your hair or other makeup.  This will ensure that you have a soft and moisturized base for your liquid lipstick!

I used to suffer from perpetual lip peeling and chap before I started exfoliating and moisturizing my lips at night before bed.  I literally saw a 180 degree turn around in a week! My favorite lip exfoliator is super cheap, and there are also tons of DIY options out there. Finding affordable options should be no problem at all!

The second most common complaint I hear about liquid lipstick is that they are difficult to remove.

Solutions

Using lip balm as a base will more than greatly help with this.

If you are still having difficulty, apply some petroleum jelly (or any lip balm with this ingredient) to your lips and let it sit while you remove all your other makeup.  By the time you finish, it should wipe off with ease!

For my old souls out there who also use cold cream, myself included, this works like a dream every time! Smooth some on your lips like you would any balm, and use a baby wipe or makeup wipe to remove.

Final Word

All things considered, I strongly believe that liquid lipsticks are more than worth it! Not all liquid lipsticks are created equal.  I recently tried the Wet’n’Wild liquid lipsticks, and though I love a lot of their other products I was very displeased.  I am someone who is always pulling my lips in, but when you do this with the W’n’W, it sticks together and peels…it is a very sticky liquid lip color and I don’t like that at all.  If you don’t mind this, then by all means look into them!  They are affordable, have great color pay off, and a good variety of shades.

I am working on tutorials and looks centered around liquid lipsticks so stay tuned! As always, thank you for stopping by!
